Threats delay Mfuleni Road resurfacing project

The City of Cape Town’s Road Infrastructure Management Department regrets to inform the local community of Mfuleni that the resurfacing of various streets has been temporarily halted after the contractor was threatened on site earlier this week. In the meantime, we are expediting efforts to reach an agreement with the community. 

On Wednesday afternoon, 10 May 2023, a group of five men confronted the contractor working on the resurfacing of streets in Mfuleni. The contractor had to stop work immediately as the men became confrontational claiming to represent the community and that they wanted to be employed on the project.

The work undertaken in Hoboshe Street, one of six streets to be resurfaced in the area, was initially scheduled for completion on 24 May 2023. The road has presently been left in a compromised state. Motorists are advised to drive carefully around this site.

The contractor is currently engaging with the local ward councillor to assist with the mediation efforts.

This incident is being followed up with Law Enforcement officials and the contractor has also written an affidavit.

'Bahlali, we understand this is frustrating and know how much you are looking forward to seeing your newly resurfaced streets. I want to assure you that we are doing all we can to ensure an agreement is reached so that work can resume as soon as possible. We are still aiming towards completing the work by the end of May 2023, if all goes well,' said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.
